Shriek-and-a-walk: Sussex Birdsong Workshops
Two half -day 'walkshops' on Saturday 12 June & Thursday 15 July
Would you like to take a walk with me and the birds in the real world?
If so, you’re welcome to join a small group on two new half-day birdsong ‘walkshops’ in Sussex over the coming weeks.
The first is this Saturday 12 June in Lewes.
This session will focus on birds of wet woodland, reedbed and river’s edge. Ahead of the morning participants will access to step-by-step audio lessons on how to identify five species of woodland and wetlands - reed warbler, sedge warbler, treecreeper, blackcap and song thrush - by sound.
We will then take a slow walk around the mosaic habitats of the Ouse Valley close to Lewes in search of these species and any others we can find on our way, with tea, cake and a Q&A to finish.
The second is Thursday 15 July in Stanmer Park, on the edge of Brighton.
While the song has subsided by mid-July, the woodland and parkland of Stanmer Park should be rich in young fledglings and parents raising their second broods.
Before the day, you’ll receive access to step-by-step audio lessons on how to identify five key woodland species - nuthatch, blackcap, great spotted woodpecker, goldcrest and stock dove - by sound. We’ll hope to hear all of them on the day.
This is a great chance to explore the restoration work at Stanmer Park, which is becoming an increasingly fascinating place to visit.
Each session is £45 per person, or £30 for those enrolled on or graduated from the Birdsong 101 and Birdsong Essentials online courses (please email me for your discount code if you haven’t received it).
You can see more details and book places on either of these events via the Birdsong Academy website.
Meanwhile normal Shriek of the Week service resumes tomorrow, with the decidedly un-shriekish whisper of the treecreeper.
Until then,
Charlie
