Another interesting post Charlie - and extra brownie points for name checking the Radiophonic Workshop!

Thanks Mark. Ron Grainer and the Radiophonic Workshop occupy a significant Who-shaped space in my brain. 🚀 (poor emoji substitute for a TARDIS)

As a kid I thought the coolest place to work would be the Radiophonic Workshop at the BBC. I’ll let you into a little secret Charlie - I directed an episode of Torchwood, so I’m actually in the ‘Whovian’ data base.

Dear Charlie, I love listening to these wonderful recordings and I spend my time outside trying to identify the birds I hear by ear, with mixed success. I walked along the Itchen yesterday and I heard several lots of birds I recognise, and some Reed warblers and another bird, incredibly loud, beautifully lyrical and unlike anything that I can recognise by ear. Listening to this, I wondered if it could have been a nightingale - the environment would be right, dense wooded thickets, but Hampshire, so maybe too far west… I was too slow to turn on Merlin, so I am left wondering what it could have been. The volume of the song was shockingly loud, as if it were just in the thickets beside me as I passed. I hope to hear it again, and perhaps capture a recording next time!! Thank you for these wonderful weekly shrieks 💛

Thank you Emily!

I'm not very familiar with the nightingale's range in Hampshire. Do you know the Cetti's warbler? If not, I wonder if that's a candidate for your mystery bird.... https://shriekoftheweek.substack.com/p/shriek-of-the-week-cettis-warbler

I will have a listen! Thank you. I also hope to hear it again next time I walk down the river and perhaps record it to confirm what it is.

I think it might have been. It did make me jump out of my skin, and it was a pretty short song with a long pause. Thank you! I hope to hear it again.
