Hi Charlie. Someone just thought of me on seeing your call out. I have a thing about rook song - a little known fact is that they have regional accents just as I do! I first began to get interested in rooks during a period of complicated grief but then the sound recordings & photographs I took became a decade-long project (now in year 4) connecting me to strangers all over the world who write to me on grief & hope as the things with feathers. I’d love to be considered for the film. Here’s a v short piece on my birds of Firle I wrote for Little Toller…
Thanks Tanya, that's beautiful. I didn't know that about Rooks, although I wonder whether all birds have regional variations (with only some, such as the Chaffinch, making it easy to tell).
I'll pass this to Helen.
And I don't suppose there are many of us who have embarked on a decade-long project with 'birds' and 'Firle' in the title! https://firlebirds.wordpress.com/ Well met!
Charlie! I’m blown away by this! And I still wouldn’t know about your Firle Birds or you my Birds of Firle if I hadn’t sent the link to mine today to the mother of my teen daughter’s good new friend - Helen D’Ascoli. It was she who prompted me to get in touch with you. But now I’m confused! Is it the same or a different Helen looking for participants?!
My single edition book is just back after going missing for four heart rending months in Scottish postal service. If you’d like to contribute do let me know before I send it off abroad again - it would be gorgeous to have a piece from you which then also flags your own Firle project?
Previous contributors include authors Adam Nicolson, Charlie Gilmour, Esther Woolfson & Guardian Country Diary columnist Nicola Chester, as well as many people who’ve never shared their writing before. You can see the kind of responses I’ve had here:
Ha, it's a small world, particularly around Firle! It's not the same Helen in this case, but I used to be one of Helen D's neighbours.
The single edition project sounds extraordinary. I'd be honoured to contribute if there's a window while it's still in Sussex. Do let me know.
The Firle Birds blog is a real mixed bag, much of it is made up of monthly reports for the parish news. But hopefully there's something of interest in there!
I have bird feeders on my patio. I can hear the birds even with my windows closed. It’s such a happy sound! Hearing and seeing them is such a treat!

Really would enjoy having a recipient from Firle itself.
And I’m going to spend time tomorrow enjoying reading your posts in turn.
Best, Tanya
